THE LOWDOWN

AUGSBURG

Augsburg have already beaten Bayern Munich on their own ground this season, so have every reason to believe that they can do the same against another title contender in Borussia Dortmund, although they will understandably have their work cut out to do so. They’ll certainly need to be at their best from a defensive standpoint and a similar performance to what they displayed against Union Berlin would give them a fighting chance. That match saw them defeat the Champions League chasers by a goal to nil, Dion Beljo scoring the winner in the 53rd minute.

Most recently though, Augsburg were beaten 3-2 by Bochum, a game which saw them on the backfoot from the start, conceding the opening goal within the first couple of minutes. Whilst they managed to get themselves level, they found themselves 3-1 down just after the hour. Despite a late goal from Kelvin Yeboah, Augsburg could not save themselves and as such aren’t yet safe from relegation going into this penultimate round of Bundesliga fixtures, with a four-point gap between them and the bottom three. Defeat here combined with other results going against them this weekend could lead to a nervy final day from their perspective.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND

Borussia Dortmund’s firepower going forward continues to blow opposition teams away in the Bundesliga as they look to keep the pressure on Bayern Munich. Edin Terzic’s side have racked up a whopping 11 goals over the course of their last two matches and backed up their 6-0 home mauling of Wolfsburg with a 5-2 thrashing of Borussia Monchengladbach, also on their own patch. So many players are contributing with goals, which will be so pleasing from Terzic’s point of view. Both midfielder Jude Bellingham and striker Sebastien Haller scored three goals each across those two games, whilst attackers Donyell Malen and Karim Adeyemi netted twice.

However, away from home has been more of a challenge for Borussia Dortmund, having failed to win in any of their last fixtures on the road in all competitions. The two most recent of those ended in draws against Stuttgart and Bochum respectively, which has ultimately handed the advantage Bayern Munich in terms of the race for the Bundesliga title and should Borussia Dortmund finish in second-place, they will no doubt live to regret those dropped points. All they can do now is win their final two games and hope that the Bavarians don’t.

THE TEAM NEWS

AUGSBURG

Augsburg are set to be without a number of players for this encounter one of them being Robert Gumny, who is suspension. A knee injury is expected to rule out Julian Baumgartlinger, whilst goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz’s shoulder keeps him out. Tobias Strobl is out long term with an ACL layoff and also missing for Borussia Dortmund’s visit will be midfielder Andre Hahn (knee) and defender Ruben Vargas (ankle).

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Koubek; Bauer, Uduokhai, Gouweleeuw; Maier, Engels, Rexhbecaj, Pedersen; Berisha, Beljo, Demirovic

UNAVAILABLE: Baumgartlinger (Injured), Gikiewicz (shoulder), Gumny (Suspended), Hahn (knee), Oxford (Fitness), Strobl (cruciate ligament), Vargas (ankle)

QUESTIONABLE: Iago (Injured)

BORUSSIA DORTMUND

The attacking trio of Donyell Malen, Sebastien Haller, Karim Adeyemi are sure to be unleashed upon Augsburg here with Julian Brandt potentially playing just behind Haller as a number ten like he did against Borussia Monchengladbach. The visitors could make a change at full-back as Raphael Guerreiro pushes for a starting spot ahead of Julian Ryerson, whilst Salih Ozcan provides an additional option in central midfield should Dortmund opt for a third player alongside Jude Bellingham and Emre Can.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Kobel; Wolf, Sule, Hummels, Guerreiro; Bellingham, Can; Malen, Brandt, Adeyemi; Haller

UNAVAILABLE: Bynoe-Gittens (Injured), Duranville (Injured), Meunier (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Morey (Fitness)

THE PREDICTION

Borussia Dortmund will know whether they have a chance to go top of the table with victory with Bayern Munich playing the day before. Either way, you’d expect them to dominate the vast majority of this contest when taking into account their offensive potency. The attacking players at their disposal should see the visitors fashion plenty of goal-scoring opportunities and provided they keep things tight at the other end, then victory here should be a formality against mid-table opposition. Back Borussia Dortmund to come out on top in this one.

TIP: BORUSSIA DORTMUND TO WIN
