THE LOWDOWN

FULHAM

Marco Silva has led Fulham to an EFL Cup semi-final for the first time ever as The Cottagers seek to win their first ever major honour. They reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last season and should have won at Old Trafford and they took the lead in this tie, too, a couple of weeks ago at Anfield. Fulham will, at 2-1 down, take the game to their opposition this week.

They come into this one on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea about ten days ago before their mini winter break. The west Londoners started this season quite slowly but they have been much-improved as the campaign has gone on with the likes of Willian beginning to gel with an improving Raul Jimenez.

LIVERPOOL

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are aiming for a ‘quadruple’ with The Reds gearing up for an FA Cup fourth round tie against Norwich City on Sunday afternoon after this semi-final second-leg. They have just had a mini winter break and will likely rotate in that game against The Canaries at Anfield on Sunday so this game will be taken extremely seriously.

They are sitting at the top-of-the-table in the Premier League, too, after their impressive 4-0 hammering of AFC Bournemouth at the weekend with a brace apiece from Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota in the second-half. They have won four out of four across all competitions in 2024, scoring 12 goals in those matches.

THE TEAM NEWS

FULHAM

Marco Silva remains without a few key players due to their involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations. Both Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi are away with Nigeria, whilst defender Fode Ballo-Toure is with the Senegalese squad.

Tim Ream has returned to the first-team squad in recent weeks so he will be available to start on Wednesday evening. Adama Traore has been suffering from a hamstring injury but could return this week.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Castagne, Adarabioyo, Ream, Robinson; Reed, Palhinha; Decordova-Reid, Pereira, Willian; Jimenez

UNAVAILABLE: Bassey (International duty), Iwobi (International duty), Ballo-Toure (International duty)

QUESTIONABLE: Traore (Injured)

LIVERPOOL

Pep Lijnders took Liverpool’s pre-match press conference and he provided an update on injuries. The Reds’ assistant coach said that Andrew Robertson has returned to training but he will still have to work up his fitness. He is expected to travel with the squad, though, down to Craven Cottage.

Curtis Jones was substituted against AFC Bournemouth but it has been described as ‘precautionary’ and there were no issues on Monday. Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to return to the side for their game against Norwich, whilst Dominik Szoboszlai is also not expected to be risked this week.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Kelleher; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Gomez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Elliott; Gakpo, Jota, Diaz

UNAVAILABLE: Matip (Injured), Bajcetic (Injured), Thiago (Injured), Salah (Injured), Tsimikas (Injured), Szoboszlai (Injured), Alexander-Arnold (Injured), Endo (International duty)

QUESTIONABLE: Robertson (Injured), Jones (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

In the first-leg, Liverpool were forced to come from behind with second-half goals from Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo turning the game around. The Reds travel down to the capital with a 2-1 victory and we are expecting another entertaining encounter. Fulham, as mentioned, will take the game to Liverpool as they did at Anfield and it would not be a shock at all if they take the lead, once again. Both teams scoring seems a good bet for a game that could go all the way through to extra-time.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
