THE LOWDOWN

TOULOUSE

Balancing domestic and continental commitments was always expected to be something of a struggle for Toulouse this season as they basically won the Coupe de France by accident last season and therefore went into this campaign lacking the necessary depth to remain intense and competitive on different fronts and avoid a relegation battle in France’s top-flight.

They come into this one on the back of a much-needed and thrilling 3-2 victory over Stade de Reims in their most recent outing, last weekend. They did lead 3-0 at half-time and managed to cling on, despite things getting a little nervy. They sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table but begin the match day sitting just four points clear of the bottom three.

NANTES

2022 Coupe de France winners and 2023 Coupe de France runners’ up Nantes had the midweek off this season, having failed to reach the Round of 16 of the competition this time around. Under the management of Jocelyn Gourvennac, who replaced Pierre Aristouy this week, they remain focused on the battle against relegation this season, hovering just above the bottom three and the relegation places.

Prior to his sacking, Nantes were beaten 1-0 by Lens last weekend, continuing a genuinely wretched run of form. They have managed to win just one of their last eight matches across all competitions, a win in the Coupe de France against Pau, and have managed just one win in their last 11 matches in France’s top-flight.

THE PREDICTION

Toulouse are beginning to show some signs of improvement in what has been a really difficult campaign. They are attempting to move away from the bottom three as they sit just a point ahead of their upcoming opponents. Nantes will hope to benefit from the ‘new manager bounce’ of Jocelyn Gourvennac but his priority will be to create a defensively rigid team. As a result, a low-scoring encounter is to be expected for this one.
