THE LOWDOWN

TOULOUSE

Toulouse arguably qualified for the UEFA Europa League too early in their rebuild after winning the Coupe de France last season, following promotion back to the top-flight in 2022. Balancing domestic and European commitments was always expected to be difficult this season and they are involved in the Ligue 1 relegation battle.

The hosts begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just a point outside of the bottom three and the relegation places. They do, though, come into this one on the back of a major upset as they defeated Monaco by two goals to one at Stade Louis II, last weekend. Logan Costa scored a 70th minute winning goal in that game.

LILLE

Former Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca has performed exceptionally well at the Stade du Nord to have Lille maintaining a push for a top three finish and UEFA Champions League qualification, as well as comfortably proceeding into the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa Conference League, too.

They have been extremely strong defensively, despite Fonseca’s over-arching style of football being to play on the front foot. They come into this one on the back of an impressive 3-0 hammering of Le Havre last weekend with Canadian international striker, Jonathan David, scoring a hat-trick. That was their 18 clean sheet of the season across all competitions this season.

THE PREDICTION

Toulouse have been in a higher level of European competition this season but they have by no means been a better side than Lille at any stage in at least the last decade or so but especially in the last 18 months. Toulouse may well feel the effects of their UEFA Europa League knockout playoff tie with Benfica in midweek, whilst Lille are fresh and come into this one looking to kick on and into the top three. Backing the visitors looks the way to go for this one.

TIP: LILLE TO WIN
