THE LOWDOWN

MONTPELLIER

Montpellier Herault finished in the middle-of-the-table last season but dropped off quite badly in the second-half and actually they very nearly got dragged into the table. With the league being reduced from 20 to 18 teams this season and, under the management of Armenian coach Michel Dar Zakarian, they are expected to struggle this season, once again.

In the opening five matches of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign, Montpellier have managed just one win so far this season. Their most recent outing was a 2-2 draw away to a similarly out of form and underperforming Strasbourg, last weekend. Their one victory came against the crisis club of France, Olympique Lyonnais, in the second game of the season.

RENNES

After another summer of fairly investment by the Pinot family, Stade Rennais will be expected to challenge towards the top three or four and gain UEFA Champions League qualification this season. They have, under the management of Bruno Genesio, had to deal with the sales of both Lovro Majer and Jeremy Doku over the summer.

Rennes come into this on the back of an impressive 3-0 hammering of Israeli champions Maccabi Haifa in their most recent outing in midweek in the UEFA Europa League group stages. Their 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign has been a bizarre one so far with just one victory and four draws in their opening five matches of the season so far.

THE TEAM NEWS

RENNES

Stade Rennais also have two key attacking injuries for this game with striking duo Arnaud Kalimuendo and Martin Terrier both unavailable.

THE PREDICTION

It has been a fairly bizarre start to this season for both of these sides’s so far. Montpellier have managed just one win and they sit in mid-table but that one victory came against crisis club Lyon. At the other end of the spectrum, Rennes have actually started quite well with two wins and four defeats across all competitions four Ligue 1 draws has them just two points above their opponents. Value, therefore, can be found in backing the double chance bet in favour of the away team.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – RENNES TO WIN OR DRAW
