THE LOWDOWN

METZ

Following promotion last season, Metz enjoyed a relatively impressive first-half to the season as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting outside of the bottom three and the relegation places. However, the home team are sitting just a couple of points above that aforementioned bottom three after a tough run before the winter break.

Coached by Hungarian manager Laszlo Boloni, Metz headed into the break on the back of four successive Ligue 1 defeats against Paris Saint-Germain, Montpellier Herault, Stade Brest and Lille. The home team were beaten on penalties by bottom-of-the-table Clermont last weekend in the Coupe de France.

TOULOUSE

As a result of winning the Coupe de France last season, Toulouse have had to cope with UEFA Europa League commitments this season with a thin squad – having only just gained promotion to the top-flight in 2022. Toulouse begin the restart to Ligue 1 action sitting third from bottom in the relegation playoff place.

The visitors have already played twice in 2024, losing the Trophee des Champions to Paris Saint-Germain by two goals to nil before comfortably defeating Chambery by three goals to nil in the Coupe de France. In Ligue 1, though, they are winless in their last ten matches in a run that stretches back to early October.

THE PREDICTION

There are a couple of potential nail-biting six pointers down at the bottom end of France’s Ligue 1 this weekend and this one very much falls into that category. Metz had enjoyed a reasonable start to the campaign but four successive losses means that their upcoming opponents, Toulouse, could overtake Metz this weekend if they were to win. The two teams have combined for just 31 goals so far this season and they are two weak sides so another low-scoring encounter is to be expected on Sunday afternoon.

TIP: UNDER 3.5 GOALS
