THE LOWDOWN

LORIENT

Much like the team that they defeated by three goals to one last weekend, Strasbourg, off-field fan unrest has overshadowed the season at Lorient after finishing in the top-half last season. They were taken over by Bill Foley last year with that effectively making them a feeder club to Premier League side, AFC Bournemouth.

So, as a result as well as general underperformance on the pitch still under the management of Regis Le Bris, Lorient have spent the season heavily involved in the relegation battle. However, that 3-1 defeat of Strasbourg last weekend was their third successive Ligue 1 victory and they have now been able to climb out of the bottom three.

NANTES

Under the management of Pierre Aristouy, Nantes had fallen into the relegation battle in Ligue 1. He was recently replaced by Jocelyn Gourvennac with the experienced coach earning a victory with the famed ‘new manager bounce’ taking a lot of the credit in his opening match as they defeated Toulouse by two goals to one with strikes from Tino Kadewere and Mostafa Mohamed.

After that win, though, Nantes suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Paris Saint-Germain in their most recent outing at Stade de la Beaujoire – Louis Fonteneau, last weekend, with goals being scored by Lucas Hernandez and Kylian Mbappe in the second-half. That loss leaves Nantes beginning the weekend in the relegation playoff place.

THE PREDICTION

The two teams are level on points down towards the bottom end of Ligue 1 but Lorient and Nantes are trending in different directions. The home team have stumbled upon some magnificent form that is more reminiscent of the performances they put in last season. Nantes, on the other hand, have only benefitted from some new manager bounce and, albeit they will be a lot more rigid and tough to beat, Lorient are the firm favourites for this one, especially with their home advantage.

TIP: LORIENT TO WIN
