THE LOWDOWN

LENS

In the last few seasons, following their promotion back to the top-flight, the off-field running of Lens has been extremely impressive and they have managed to launch themselves into the UEFA Champions League after being runners’ up last season. They have since lost both Seko Fofana and Lois Openda over the summer, though.

Those departures are key and that has been proven at the start of this season as they remain winless in Ligue 1. They come into this on the back of a 1-1 draw with Sevilla in midweek and that draw in Andalusia followed collecting just one point from their opening five league games. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting rock-bottom.

TOULOUSE

With some impressive off-field work by Damien Comolli, Toulouse returned to the French top-flight in 2022 and they had an excellent return last season. They defeated Nantes in the Coupe de France final to qualify for the group stages of this seasons UEFA Europa League and also comfortably survived with a mid-table finish.

They have struggled at the start of this season but did earn an important and impressive goalless draw in the south of France away to Olympique de Marseille in their most recent outing, last weekend. Toulouse sit in mid-table at the moment and they have managed just one win in their opening five matches so far.

THE TEAM NEWS

LENS

Regis Le Bris has three injury concerns for this weekend with two key absentees in Jimmy Cabot and Wuilker Farinez missing for this weekend’s visit of Toulouse.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Samba; Gradit, Danso, Khusanov; Aguilar, Abdul Samed, Thomasson, Machado; Sotoca, Fulgini; Wahi

UNAVAILABLE: Costa (Injured), Cabot (Injured), Farinez (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

TOULOUSE

Following their UEFA Europa League game against Union SG in midweek, Toulouse will remain without a few key players including Ibrahim Cissoko.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Restes; Desler, Costa, Nicolaisen, Diarra; Donnum, Schmidt, Sierro, Genreau; Magri, Dallinga

UNAVAILABLE: Skytta (Injured), Zanden (Injured), Cissoko (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

THE PREDICTION

Both of these sides were involved in European competition during the week so it could well be the case that both sides feel the impact of that. Lens and Toulouse are two clubs, in terms of finances, that should not necessarily be involved in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League this season respectively. A regression to the mean and tiredness from their midweek excursions means this one may not be a thriller and a low-scoring encounter, therefore, is to be expected.
