THE LOWDOWN

LE HAVRE

Following promotion to the top-flight for the first time in over 15 years last season, Le Havre have enjoyed a genuinely impressive and respectable campaign as they sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures. They have, though, struggled for victories of late and come into this one on the back of a 3-1 defeat to Strasbourg in the cup in midweek.

Under the management of former Slovenian international defender Luka Elsner, Le Havre have managed five victories in 20 Ligue 1 matches so far this season with their relative success being built on a stubbornness and being difficult to play against. For example, their 20 matches have produced just 47 goals so far this season.

RENNES

After a busy summer transfer window, Stade Rennais had a slow start to the campaign and eventually parted company with Bruno Genesio during the November international break, who was replaced by the returning Julian Stephan. Performances and results have been much-improved since Stephan was appointed as they try and challenge for a top six finish again this season.

Rennes come into this one on the back of a 6-1 annihilation of Ligue 2 side Sochaux in their most recent outing in the Round of 16 of the Coupe de France in midweek with a braces from Amine Gouiri and Armand Kalimuendo, as well as goals from Ibrahim Salah and Benjamin Bourigeaud. They are now unbeaten in their last eight matches across all competitions.

THE PREDICTION

As mentioned, Le Havre’s form this season, which has them in a respectable position and not currently involved in the Ligue 1 relegation battle, has been built upon an impressive defensive record. It does mean they lack a cutting edge and thrust to win matches, though, and they now come up against one of the in-form teams in the league who are looking to propel themselves into the battle for Europe ahead of facing AC Milan in midweek. A Rennes victory is the way to go for this one.

TIP: RENNES TO WIN
