THE LOWDOWN

CLERMONT

Clermont arrived in Ligue 1 in 2021 for the first time ever and they have defied expectations to survive this long, even managing a top-half finish last season, but they are now simply waiting for their relegation to be mathematically confirmed, albeit they do look set to stick by long-term manager, Pascal Gastien.

The home team come into this one on the back of a 1-0 defeat away to fellow strugglers Metz with a 33rd minute winning penalty scored by Georgia international Georges Mikautadze in that match. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures eight points clear of the relegation playoff place with just three victories in their 25 matches so far this season.

LE HAVRE

After gaining promotion back to the top-flight of French football for the first time in over 15 years last season, Le Havre begin the 26th match day of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign sitting in the middle-of-the-table but only a couple of points above the bottom three and the relegation playoffs ahead of this weekend.

The visitors come into this one on the back of a much-needed victory as they defeated Toulouse by a goal to nil at Stade Oceane with a 60th minute winning goal via left-back Christopher Operi. Prior to that victory, they had endured a five-match losing streak and a seven-match winless run of form across all competitions.

THE TEAM NEWS

CLERMONT

Clermont have just one injury concern for this weekend’s visit of Le Havre as former Roma and Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons is unavailable.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Diaw; Konate, Matsima, Pelmard, Neto Borges; Gastien, Keita; Allevinah, Cham, Rashani; Nicholson

UNAVAILABLE: Gonalons (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

LE HAVRE

Former Slovenia international Luka Elsner will be able to name an unchanged side for Le Havre this weekend with no fresh injuries or suspensions.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Desmas; Sangante, Kinkoue, Lloris, Operi; Targhalline, Toure; Casimir, Kuzyayev, Ayew; Bayo

THE PREDICTION

These two were always expected to be in the battle against the drop this season but perhaps not with a ten-point gap between them and definitely not with it being Clermont that are ten points behind Le Havre. They are two of the more limited teams in France’s top-flight all over the pitch but particularly in attack, having combined for just 42 goals this season and under 2.5 goals appears almost inevitable for this one.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
