THE LOWDOWN

CLERMONT

After a busy summer transfer window, Stade Rennais had a slow start to the campaign and eventually parted company with Bruno Genesio during the November international break, who was replaced by the returning Julian Stephan. Performances and results have been much-improved since Stephan was appointed as they try and challenge for a top six finish again this season.

Rennes come into this one on the back of a 6-1 annihilation of Ligue 2 side Sochaux in their most recent outing in the Round of 16 of the Coupe de France in midweek with a braces from Amine Gouiri and Armand Kalimuendo, as well as goals from Ibrahim Salah and Benjamin Bourigeaud. They are now unbeaten in their last eight matches across all competitions.

BREST

Stade Brest have been the surprise package in French football so far this season with former Sunderland player Eric Roy at the helm. They do, though, come into this one on the back of a 3-1 defeat away to Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16 in the Coupe de France at Parc des Princes, despite putting up another stubborn performance in the capital.

They begin the 21st match day of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign sitting tucked inside the top three and the UEFA Champions League qualification spots. Their most recent league outings have seen them share more than respectable draws with the other members of the top three, PSG and Nice. Those results mean they are now unbeaten in their last nine matches in the league.

THE PREDICTION

At the start of this season, these two teams would have appeared evenly matched with both sides content enough to avoid a relegation battle in Ligue 1. However, as we approach the run-in in France’s top-flight, Clermont appear destined to drop down into the second-tier, whilst Brest will want to at least finish in the top six after a magnificent run of form of late. That form is expected to continue with a victory in this one on Sunday afternoon.

TIP: BREST TO WIN
