THE LOWDOWN

BREST

Former Sunderland player Eric Roy is in charge of an impressive Stade Brest side that are legitimately competing for a top three finish and potential UEFA Champions League qualification in Ligue 1 this season. They were, though, held to a third successive draw in Ligue 1 as they just drift outside of the top three ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures.

Their most recent outing saw them held to a 1-1 draw by bottom-of-the-table Clermont, conceding a late equaliser in that match. They are now unbeaten in their last ten matches in Ligue 1 with the only defeat in their last 13 matches across all competitions being a 3-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Coupe de France about ten days ago.

MARSEILLE

Olympique de Marseille come into this one on the back of an entertaining but frustrating 2-2 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk in the first-leg of their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie on Thursday evening. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Marseille the lead in that game before Mykola Matvyenko levelled then Iliman Ndiaye scored late on but Eguinaldo scored a stoppage-time equaliser.

Gennaro Gattuso’s l’OM have endured an extremely difficult and awkward run of form of late as they sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table after a winless run of form. That aforementioned draw with the Ukrainian champions means they have now managed just two victories in their last ten matches across all competitions.

THE PREDICTION

We have a roles reversal in terms of club size and reputation as opposed to their current reality. Stade Brest are challenging for UEFA Champions League qualification but have done so with a fairly reactive style of football. Given that they come up against a Marseille side that are struggling for any sort of form or fluency and the fact Marseille have scored even fewer goals than Brest, a low-scoring encounter with under 3.5 goals seems highly likely for this one on Sunday evening.

TIP: UNDER 3.5 GOALS
