THE LOWDOWN

TOTTENHAM

Ange Postecoglu’s reign at Tottenham Hotspur has been generally categorised as a positive one with a shift in the playing style and mood at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, the Australian will want to be the man that returns silverware to that part of north London, especially after their disappointing second round exit to Fulham in the EFL Cup in August.

Spurs have been fairly inconsistent of late after a very fast start to the campaign. Their 3-1 defeat of AFC Bournemouth on New Years’ Eve means they have managed four victories with a draw and five defeats in their last ten Premier League matches. Those ten games have consisted of 40 goals with the free-flowing style really taking hold.

BURNLEY

Last season, as they romped their way to the Championship title, Burnley reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, too, before eventually being thrashed by six goals to nil by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The Clarets’ priority this season will simply be on ensuring survival and heavy rotation of quite a deep squad is to be expected for Vincent Kompany’s men on Friday evening.

The Lancastrians come into this one on the back of a 3-2 defeat away to title challenging Aston Villa last weekend in a game in which they conceded an 89th minute winner by Douglas Luiz from the spot having gone down to ten men with over half an hour to go. They are currently five points adrift of safety in the league.

THE TEAM NEWS

TOTTENHAM

Ange Postecoglu has confirmed that Micky van de Ven has returned to training this week and he could well be involved in the squad to face Burnley on Friday evening but the former Celtic boss did insist that he will not be rushed into the side.

Ivan Perisic, Alejo Veliz, Cristian Romero, James Maddison, Manor Solomon and Ryan Sessegnon remain out with injuries, whilst Dejan Kulusevski has returned to the squad after suspension. Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr and Son Heung-min are all away on international duty.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Forster; Porro, Emerson, Davies, Udogie; Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Lo Celso; Kulusevski, Richarlison, Johnson

UNAVAILABLE: Maddison (Injured), Perisic (Injured), Veliz (Injured), Solomon (Injured), Sessegnon (Injured), Sarr (International duty), Son (International duty), Bissouma (International duty)

QUESTIONABLE: Van De Ven (Injured)

BURNLEY

In his pre-match press conference, Vincent Kompany confirmed that defender Jordan Beyer would miss the tie due to an injury that he sustained in their aforementioned 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa last weekend.

The German joins Luca Koleosho on the sidelines, whilst Hjalmar Ekdal and Jack Cork remain doubtful. They will also be without Norwegian international Sander Berge after he was sent off in that game at Villa Park.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Muric; Vitinho, O’Shea, Delcroix, Taylor; Gudmundsson, Ramsey, Brownhill, Odobert; Foster, Amdouni

UNAVAILABLE: Berge (Suspended), Koleosho (Injured), Beyer (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Cork (Injured), Ekdal (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This one could be quite an entertaining clash on Friday. The league meeting between these two produced seven goals back in September as Tottenham won by five goals to two at Turf Moor. Spurs’ last ten matches have produced an average of four goals per game and they now face a Burnley side that remain intent on playing an attacking and front foot style of football under Kompany. As a result, a high-scoring affair is to be expected, albeit with the hosts remaining firm favourites for the win.

TIP: TOTTENHAM TO WIN & OVER 2.5 GOALS
