THE LOWDOWN

WEST HAM

With back-to-back 2-0 victories against Manchester United and Arsenal to go into the New Year, West Ham United sat sixth in the Premier League table and primed for a potential FA Cup run with a third round tie at home to Championship opposition, to go with their Round of 16 tie in the UEFA Europa League in March.

The Irons, though, were knocked out of the cup by Bristol City and their 3-0 hammering at the hands of Manchester United last Sunday means they are now winless in six matches across all competitions in 2024. To go with that, they failed to add any attackers to their squad in the transfer window, which was an apparent priority, whilst also allowing both Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma to depart.

ARSENAL

Mikel Arteta and his Arsenal players celebrated their 3-1 defeat of Liverpool wildly at the weekend as The Gunners closed the gap on their rivals at the top-of-the-table to two points. They had endured a bit of a sticky patch of form throughout the months of December and early January but are beginning to find a groove as we head into the few months of the campaign.

That victory over league leading Liverpool means that they have now enjoyed three successive victories, following on from a hard-fought 2-1 defeat of Nottingham Forest and a 5-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace. This weekend’s trip to the London Stadium will see them revisit one of the scenes of their mini capitulation in the spring last year as they gave up a first title in 19 years.

THE TEAM NEWS

WEST HAM

There was speculation that Michail Antonio could return to the West Ham squad this weekend after returning to training in the week. However, David Moyes has confirmed that the Jamaican international will remain unavailable.

Brazilian international midfielder Lucas Paqueta remains unavailable due to injury, too. Alphonse Areola is expected to be fit, though, and should start on Sunday.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Coufal, Mavropanos, Zouma, Emerson; Phillips, Alvarez; Ward-Prowse, Soucek, Kudus; Bowen

UNAVAILABLE: Paqueta (Injured), Antonio (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Areola (Injured)

ARSENAL

After being substituted last weekend with a bit of a knock, Mikel Arteta has said that England international Bukayo Saka 'looks ok' for this one so is likely to start, as ever.

The Gunners said 'we are hopeful that we are going to have a few back' but did not specify who with the likes of Takehiro Tomiyasu, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus doubts.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Odegaard, Rice, Havertz; Saka, Jesus, Martinelli

UNAVAILABLE: Timber (Injured), Partey (Injured), Vieira (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Tomiyasu (Injured), Zinchenko (Injured), Jesus (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

In April, as mentioned, West Ham away was one of the games that contributed to Arsenal blowing their title chances. Bukayo Saka missed a penalty at 2-0 up and The Hammers fought back to share a 2-2 draw. The hosts are coming under a bit of pressure and their manager is earning a fair bit of stick but they remain a good team with good players, ideally set up for a game like this. Arsenal themselves have found a bit of rhythm in attack so whilst it could be a fun game for the neutral, it is still expected that the visitors come out on top.

TIP: ARSENAL TO WIN & BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
