THE LOWDOWN

TOTTENHAM

  • It was the same old story for Spurs last time out as they had to once again come from behind – this time against Brentford – to salvage something from the game, although the point isn’t really enough for their aspirations.
  • World Cup winner Cristian Romero has returned and is available for selection, and it would be no surprise to see Antonio Conte thrust the centre-back straight into his starting line-up here.

ASTON VILLA

  • Aston Villa are coming towards the end of a tough run of fixtures with their latest outing seeing them lose out to Liverpool on Boxing Day, but Unai Emery will be quietly confident of getting something out of this game.
  • Villa have a returning World Cup winner of their own in the form of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and the inspirational Argentine will surely start here, while striker Danny Ings will be hoping for a recall to the starting line-up.

THE PREDICTION

Spurs just can’t seem to kick the habit of making poor starts in matches and it is costing them valuable points that could well come back to haunt them come the end of the season. They definitely have the edge in quality over Villa but the visitors have been making gradual improvements under Unai Emery and won’t go down without a fight. Given the manner of Spurs' contests in recent times, it would surprise no one if this game contains plenty of goalmouth action so over 2.5 goals looks a tempter.

TIP: OVER 2.5 GOALS
