THE LOWDOWN

SHEFFIELD UTD

The return of Chris Wilder in early December, replacing Paul Heckingbottom in the Bramall Lane dugout, did lead to an immediate improvement in Sheffield United’s performances but The Blades have regressed again as they remain rock-bottom in the Premier League table, already eight points adrift of safety.

However, another potential points deduction for Everton as well as one for Nottingham Forest, has give United some hope of somehow scrambling their way to safety. They did put in a strong display in their most recent outing as they hammered League Two Gillingham by four goals to nil in the third round of the FA Cup at the Priestfield Stadium a fortnight ago.

WEST HAM

The demands on West Ham United have not been helped by a depleted squad, especially in attack, with injuries to Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio and Lucas Paqueta, as well as Mohammed Kudus being away on international duty. The Hammers do begin this weekend sitting in the top six in the Premier League table, though, and can move five points clear of Manchester United this weekend.

The Irons come into this one on the back of a really disappointing 1-0 defeat to Championship side Bristol City in their FA Cup third round replay with Said Benrahma sent off and now adding to their availability issues in attack. They have, though, suffered just one defeat in their last nine matches in the league.

THE TEAM NEWS

SHEFFIELD UTD

Chris Wilder discussed injuries in his pre-match press conference, suggesting that Sheffield United are ‘in a really good place as a group.’ He said that Tom Davies is back training on grass with Rhian Brewster and Rhys Norrington-Davies beginning their return.

Chris Basham is missing the rest of the season, whilst Max Lowe is also unavailable. John Egan, Jayden Bogle, George Baldock, Auston Trusty and Daniel Jebbison are all still doubtful, whilst Anel Ahmedhodzic, who is the subject of interest from other clubs, is also a doubt.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Foderingham; Baldock, Robinson, Trusty; Bogle, Norwood, Souza, Thomas; McAtee, Brooks; Osula

UNAVAILABLE: Ben Slimane (International duty), Larouci (International duty), Lowe (Injured), Basham (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Jebbison (Illness), Trusty (Injured), Ahmedhodzic (Injured), Baldock (Injured), Bogle (Injured), Davies (Injured), Egan (Injured)

WEST HAM

David Moyes remained quite cryptic with regards to whether Jarrod Bowen would be returning to the West Ham squad for this weekend. The Scotsman said ‘Jarrod is doing better. Will he be available? I won’t be giving that information out.’

Moyes does remain without several other key first-teamers, though. Mohammed Kudus is out at the Africa Cup of Nations with the Ghanaian national team, whilst both Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio are unavailable due to injury.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Areola; Mavropanos, Zouma, Cresswell; Coufal, Ward-Prowse, Soucek, Emerson; Bowen, Cornet; Ings

UNAVAILABLE: Kudus (International duty), Paqueta (Injured), Antonio (Injured), Benrahma (Suspended), Ageurd (International duty), Fornals (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Bowen (Injured), Alvarez (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United have been much-improved in terms of performances since he was re-appointed in early December but The Blades face a real uphill battle. They welcome a West Ham United side that appeared fatigued in their defeat to Bristol City in midweek but have been in excellent form in the Premier League and will also have the morale boost of a potential return of Jarrod Bowen, as well as links to Emile Smith Rowe. The Hammers are favourites for this one.

TIP: WEST HAM TO WIN
