THE LOWDOWN

SHEFFIELD UTD

It has been a turbulent week for Sheffield United. Their 5-0 hammering at the hands of fellow strugglers Burnley, whom they gained automatic promotion alongside last season, was followed by the news that Paul Heckingbottom was set to be replaced by the returning Chris Wilder. That preceded a 2-0 defeat at home to Liverpool on Wednesday evening.

This is a bad Blades team that gained promotion from a below par Championship with an inadequate squad that was severely weakened over the summer. They have five points from 15 games and even with the potential unquantifiable and potentially mythical boost that Chris Wilder provides, it looks like it could be a record-breakingly poor campaign.

BRENTFORD

Under the management of Thomas Frank, Brentford have been supreme in the absence of their talismanic striker, Ivan Toney. Even in the absence of the England international forward, The Bees could well be on course to ensure back-to-back seasons of finishing in the top-half of the Premier League.

They were beaten by two goals to one in midweek at the AMEX Stadium against Brighton and Hove Albion and that has continued the Londoners’ iffy run of form of late. Brentford have now suffered three defeats in their last four matches with their only victory in that time coming at home to Luton Town.

THE TEAM NEWS

SHEFFIELD UTD

Chris Wilder is having to deal with a couple of suspension issues for this weekend's visit of Brentford as both Ollie Norwood and Oli McBurnie are currently unavailable.

Their right wing-back, George Baldock, is also a doubt for this weekend and could well be missing for this weekend's clash. He could be sidelined with the likes of fellow defenders Chris Basham and Rhys Norrington-Davies.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Foderingham; Trusty, Robinson, Ahmedhodzic; Bogle, Hamer, Souza, Brooks; McAtee, Osula; Archer

UNAVAILABLE: Basham (Injured), Egan (Injured), Norrington-Davies (Injured), Jebbison (Illness), Norwood (Suspended), Davies (Injured), McBurnie (Suspended), Brewster (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Baldock (Injured)

BRENTFORD

Brentford have dealt well with the absence of Ivan Toney, as mentioned. However, their steady form and consistency has been heavily reliant on Bryan Mbeumo in attack.

Mbeumo went off injured in Brentford's 2-1 defeat to Brighton in midweek and the Cameroonian international will be missing for the trip north to Yorkshire. They also have several major injury concerns this weekend defensively with Rico Henry, Kristoffer Ajer, Nathan Collins and Aaron Hickey all missing.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Flekken; Roerslev, Pinnock, Mee, Ghoddos; Onyeka, Janelt, Norgaard, Baptiste; Maupay, Wissa

UNAVAILABLE: Collins (Injured), Ajer (Injured), Hickey (Injured), Henry (Injured), Schade (Injured), Mbeumo (Injured), Toney (Suspended)

QUESTIONABLE: Jensen (Injured), Dasilva (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

If Sheffield United are to spark anything in terms of a fight against the drop this season then they are simply going to have to win at home to mid-table teams that are out of form. Cameron Archer and James McAtee showed signs of connecting well against Liverpool but they face a Brentford side that are well grooved at this level, waiting to come out of their poor slump. The Blades will, though, surely be confident of getting on the scoresheet at Bramall Lane so both teams scoring would represent good value.

BETTING TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
