THE LOWDOWN

NEWCASTLE

Newcastle took a giant step towards qualifying for the Champions League next season by overcoming the potential stumbling block of Brighton with flying colours in their Thursday night clash, and one more win would absolutely guarantee a top-four finish (should Liverpool beat Aston Villa on Saturday).

Eddie Howe's men came out of the blocks with real intent on Thursday, and it was no surprise when they went ahead courtesy of a Deniz Undav own goal midway through the first half. A Dan Burn header doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time, and although Undav made amends by halving Newcastle's lead just after the break, the game was put beyond any doubt when Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes netted in the closing stages.

LEICESTER

Leicester are left staring relegation in the face after they were convincingly outplayed by Liverpool on Monday night, and they simply must get a positive result here in order to give themselves a fighting chance on the final day. Even a draw may not be good enough depending on how Everton fared on Saturday.

It was clear from the outset against Liverpool that there was only going to be one winner, as there was a real lack of intensity and fight in the Leicester ranks. For a team described by many as 'too good to go down', they looked every bit a team resigned to their fate. It would take a significant turnaround in mentality for them to now beat the drop, and that has to start here in what is - unfortunately for Leicester - one of the most difficult grounds to visit right now.

THE TEAM NEWS

NEWCASTLE

The win over Brighton came at something of a cost as Eddie Howe has a number of injury concerns ahead of the Leicester's visit. Chief among those is that of Joe Willock, who looks highly likely to miss out with what appears to be a hamstring strain. Elliott Anderson - Willock's replacement in that match - is a likely starter then, while Howe will also be hoping that Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton can shake off knocks. Key full-back Kieran Trippier also falls into that category, although he will be given every chance of recovery.

Jacob Murphy remains a doubt so Miguel Almiron is likely to retain his place in the side, while red-hot Callum Wilson will surely start in the central striker role again. Alexander Isak did not have his finest game on the left flank against Brighton and is potentially at risk of being rotated out for either Allan Saint-Maximin or Antony Gordon.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn; Anderson, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Wilson, Isak

UNAVAILABLE: Lascelles (Injured), Krafth (Injured), Ritchie (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Trippier (Injured), S. Longstaff (Injured), Bruno Guimaraes (Injured), Willock (Injured), Joelinton (Injured), Murphy (Injured), Fraser (Out of favour)

LEICESTER

Dean Smith will be scrambling for solutions at the moment as he has unable to get a tune out of the Foxes since his appointment, and it is in defence where the problems are severest. With eight goals conceded in their last two games, he may consider a change in personnel at the back, while defensive midfield is also due a shake-up.

Kelechi Iheanacho is back in training and could be thrust straight into the starting line-up at the expense of Jamie Vardy, but Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's prospects look a little bleaker and could be set to miss out once more. Defender Caglar Soyuncu, meanwhile, is targeting the last game of the season for a return from a thigh injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Iversen; Pereira, Souttar, Evans, Castagne; Soumare, Mendy; Maddison, Tielemans, Barnes; Iheanacho

UNAVAILABLE: Ward (Injured), Soyuncu (Injured), Justin (Injured), Vestergaard (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Bertrand (Fitness), Dewsbury-Hall (Injured), Iheanacho (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Two teams at opposite ends of the confidence spectrum meet here with Newcastle on the brink of a top-four finish that would see the Magpies well ahead of schedule, while Leicester - a shadow of their former selves - are facing the very real prospect of a return to the Championship for the first time since the 2013-14 season. There has been little to suggest recently that Leicester are capable of launching a survival mission, and in front of an adoring St. James' Park crowd in their final home game of the season, the hosts should run out fairly comfortable winners and book their ticket to Europe's elite.
