THE LOWDOWN

NEWCASTLE

Newcastle United’s remarkable injury and availability crisis has led to a really underwhelming run of form which included The Magpies being knocked out of all European football in midweek, finishing fourth in their UEFA Champions League group after suffering a 2-1 defeat at home to AC Milan, despite taking a first-half lead.

Eddie Howe’s side have now suffered three successive defeats in all competitions and conceded nine goals in those three games. They have only defeated Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United across all competitions since mid-October. That is just four victories in their last 12 matches in all competitions as they try and stay in the top seven in the Premier League.

FULHAM

Fulham come into this weekend following back-to-back 5-0 victories at Craven Cottage against Nottingham Forest and then West Ham. The west Londoners have leapt into the top half of the table with three victories in their last four matches and they are just five points behind Newcastle in seventh place in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying spots.

The Cottagers have been generally entertaining to watch throughout the tenure of Marco Silva ever since his appointment in 2021. Their 16 matches in the Premier League so far this season have consisted of a combined total of 52 goals with 26 scored and 26 conceded as they look to push on towards the top half.

THE TEAM NEWS

NEWCASTLE

Eddie Howe’s availability concerns have been almost ridiculous in recent months with The Magpies’ small squad struggling with several injury issues and suspension concerns throughout the last few weeks and that has continued this weekend.

Anthony Gordon will have to go through a late fitness test to see whether he will be available to face Fulham on Saturday afternoon and Kieran Trippier is also out suspended with the Englishman picking up his fifth yellow card of the season last weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Dubravka; Livramento, Lascelles, Schar, Burn; Miley, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Wilson, Isak

UNAVAILABLE: Pope (Injured), Targett (Injured), Manquillo (Injured), Trippier (Suspended), Anderson (Injured), Tonali (Suspended), Willock (Injured), J. Murphy (Injured), Barnes (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Botman (Injured), Gordon (Injured)

FULHAM

Marco Silva is having to deal with a few injury issues, particularly defensively, as United States international Tim Ream joins Issa Diop on the sidelines due to an injury and he is expected to be out until after Christmas.

Willian had also been a strong doubt for this weekend but the former Brazil winger trained on Thursday and is now expected to keep his spot in the starting line-up as The Cottagers head north to St James’ Park.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Tete, Adarabioyo, Bassey, Robinson; Reed, Palhinha; Iwobi, Andreas, Willian; Jimenez

UNAVAILABLE: Ream (Injured), Traore (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Diop (Injured), Willian (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

It has been a very underwhelming few weeks for Newcastle and things are only going to get a bit tougher as they head into the hectic festive schedule with an EFL Cup quarter-final against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the horizon. Home advantage will count for something but the form Fulham have shown in their last two games will give the visitors immense confidence of at least bloodying the nose of their opposition on Saturday afternoon.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
