THE LOWDOWN

CHELSEA

  • Chelsea have had a couple of weeks without football as they languish in the middle-of-the-table. Graham Potter will likely be thankful to have had that time to work with his squad after a run of just two victories in seven matches since the return from the FIFA World Cup and just four wins in 15 across all competitions.
  • It remains to be seen which of Chelsea’s raft of new signings will feature in the starting line-up here, but Mykhailo Mudryk’s impressive debut off the bench last time out could well earn the Ukrainian a place in the XI.

FULHAM

  • Marco Silva’s Fulham have the frustration of an FA Cup replay in the upcoming midweek after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Championship side Sunderland last weekend. That result followed back-to-back narrow 1-0 defeats to fellow European challengers Newcastle and Tottenham in the Premier League.
  • Silva reported no new injury concerns, meaning Neeskens Kebano is the only player warming the treatment room at the minute.

THE PREDICTION

It is expected that Chelsea will improve in the second-half of the campaign and without sounding too harsh, it would be difficult for The Blues to be much worse than tenth; given the resources available to Potter. Todd Boehly has made things difficult for his Head Coach with a ridiculous splurge on new signings, both in the summer and the winter, meaning that any improvement by Chelsea will likely have to sacrifice Potter’s overarching principles of a fluent and front-foot style of football, for something more pragmatic and results-driven; at least until the end of the season. The Cottagers returned from the World Cup in impressive form but, especially in their victory at Leicester, there were concerns that performances had actually dipped from their pre-tournament form. Since defeating Chelsea, who had gone down to ten men, last month, Fulham are winless in three. A tough to watch home win seems a good bet for this one.

TIP: CHELSEA TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
