THE LOWDOWN

BURNLEY

Following promotion last season, Burnley have endured an extremely difficult campaign and appear already accepting of their destiny, which is a swift return to the Championship; albeit they will do so by sticking with their manager, Vincent Kompany. That is with the intention of maintaining the style of football that saw them romp to the second-tier title last season.

The Lancastrians come into this one on the back of a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield in their most recent outing, last weekend. That loss means they are now winless in their last seven matches across all competitions since defeating Fulham at Craven Cottage just before Christmas. They have conceded 50 goals in 24 matches thus far.

ARSENAL

Arsenal went into the New Year on the back of some really poor form that had a few questioning whether they would even be able to cling on to a top four spot. However, The Gunners’ produced an impressive 6-0 annihilation of London rivals West Ham United on Sunday afternoon to continue a fine start to the league in 2024.

In four matches in the Premier League this year, Mikel Arteta’s men have enjoyed four victories, scoring 16 goals in the process with hammerings of capital city clubs Crystal Palace and West Ham sandwiching a hard-fought victory over Nottingham Forest and an impressive 3-1 defeat of league leaders Liverpool earlier this month.

THE TEAM NEWS

BURNLEY

Vincent Kompany described Charlie Taylor’s return to the side as ‘close close’ last week and he has now had a full week of training with The Clarets so is expected to be back involved as they host Arsenal, whom he scored against in the reverse fixture.

South African striker Lyle Foster has had surgery on a ‘chronic issue’ so he will be unavailable, whilst Jordan Beyer could return but is being assessed on a week-to-week basis. Both Luca Koleosho and Nathan Redmond are out for the season.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Trafford; Assignon, O’Shea, Esteve, Taylor; Ramsey, Brownhill, Berge, Odobert; Amdouni, Fofana

UNAVAILABLE: Beyer (Injured), Redmond (Injured), Koleosho (Injured), Foster (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

ARSENAL

As ever, Mikel Arteta refused to give away too much on the status of some of Arsenal's injury issues, saying 'I'm positive we will get a few back for tomorrow' but refusing to be drawn on anyone specifically.

The likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Emile Smith Rowe, Gabriel Jesus and Jorginho have all been recent injury doubts and concerns but none have been definitely ruled out for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): David Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Kiwior; Odegaard, Rice, Havertz; Saka, Trossard, Martinelli

UNAVAILABLE: Timber (Injured), Partey (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Tomiyasu (Injured), Zinchenko (Injured), Jorginho (Injured), Vieira (Injured), Smith Rowe (Injured), Jesus (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This one would appear a foregone conclusion. As was the case when Burnley were last in the Premier League, Turf Moor is famously not a very difficult place to go and that is once again expected to be the case as they welcome a relentless Arsenal side to Lancashire. The Gunners have been magnificent this year as they look to rebuild their title challenge and they are getting victories by racking up decent margins of victory, too, so another heavy win for Mikel Arteta’s men would appear likely on Saturday afternoon.

TIP: ARSENAL TO WIN -1 HANDICAP
