THE LOWDOWN

BRIGHTON

Brighton suffered their first setback of the season when they were outplayed by West Ham last weekend, but the Seagulls are still in a strong position in the table at this early stage of the campaign.

Roberto De Zerbi's meN were a little off the pace against the Hammers and were a goal behind at half-time after James Ward-Prowse put the visitors ahead. A quick-fire double from Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio put the game to bed in the second half, with Pascal Gross notching a consolation for the hosts.

NEWCASTLE

Newcastle were left wondering how an earth they lost last weekend's showdown with Liverpool, which made it back-to-back defeats for the Magpies.

Everything was going in Newcastle's favour in the first half, with Anthony Gordon putting Eddie Howe's men in front before Reds defender Virgil van Dijk was dismissed for a last-ditch challenge just three minutes later. Newcastle failed to take advantage of the extra man though, and after Liverpool managed to stay in the game, a brace from substitute Darwin Nunez stole the points for Liverpool.

THE TEAM NEWS

BRIGHTON

Danny Welbeck has been ruled out with a minor muscle issue, which could pave the way for Joao Pedro to return to the starting line-up in the hole behind Evan Ferguson. Jason Steele may find himself back in goal after Bart Verbruggen let in three against West Ham, while Joel Veltman could be preferred to the ageing James Milner at right-back.

Marquee loan signing Ansu Fati is unlikely to be available having completed his move on transfer deadline day.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Steele, Veltman, Webster, Dunk, Estupinan; Gross, Gilmour; March, Joao Pedro, Mitoma; Ferguson

UNAVAILABLE: Moder (Injured), Enciso (Injured), Welbeck (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Lamptey (Fitness), Fati (Ineligible)

NEWCASTLE

There will be a late call on Sven Botman, while Jamaal Lascelles is a doubt following a police investigation into a fight involving the centre-back. If both are unavailable, Howe may need to move Dan Burn inside and field Matt Targett at left-back.

Joelinton also faces a late fitness test, with Elliot Anderson and Sean Longstaff alternative options in the midfield three.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Pope, Trippier, Schar, Burn, Targett; Tonali, Guimaraes, Anderson; Almiron, Isak, Gordon

UNAVAILABLE: Krafth (Injured), Willock (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Botman (Injured), Lascelles (Personal reasons), Manquillo (Fitness), Hall (Fitness), Joelinton (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Brighton and Newcastle were both drawn into groups of death in their respective European competitions this week, but for now all the focus will be on their league campaign and both are aiming to bounce back from defeats last week. They will certainly see each other as rivals for finishing in the European places this season, and neither will want to give an inch to the other. This promises to an entertaining, closely-fought match, and one that could easily end all square.
