THE LOWDOWN

ASTON VILLA

It has been a fairly bizarre run of form for Unai Emery and Aston Villa of late as The Villains begin the weekend sitting tucked inside the top four with a European knockout tie on the horizon but there will be a little concern that they could well drift away from that top four between now and the end of the season.

They were hammered 3-1 by Chelsea in their FA Cup fourth round replay at Villa Park in midweek and that means they have now managed just four victories in their last 11 matches across all competitions. Those wins have come against the bottom two teams in the league, one came against Championship Middlesbrough in the FA Cup and the other needed a late turnaround at an out of form Brentford.

MAN UTD

Erik ten Hag does, is and will remain under major pressure at Manchester United, despite the fact they come into this one on the back of three successive victories and have scored 11 goals in that time with a victory over League Two Newport County, a 97th minute winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers and then an unconvincing defeat of West Ham United, despite winning by three goals to nil.

They have scored nine goals in their three Premier League matches in the calendar year of 2024 so far. They had only managed 22 goals in 20 matches beforehand and there will still be major concern as the Dutchman attempts to try and find some form, and maybe even a top six finish, in these final few months of the campaign.

THE TEAM NEWS

ASTON VILLA

Unai Emery confirmed that left-back Lucas Digne has returned to first-team training this week and he could be involved this weekend. Ezri Konsa has been confirmed to be missing the next four to six weeks with a knee injury.

Both Pau Torres and Nicolo Zaniolo are back available for The Villains but they will remain without long-term injury absentees Tyrone Mings, Emi Buendia and Jhon Duran.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Martinez; Cash, Carlos, Torres, Digne; Luiz, Kamara; Bailey, McGinn, Diaby; Watkins

UNAVAILABLE: Konsa (Injured), Mings (Injured), Buendia (Injured), Duran (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

MAN UTD

In the aftermath of their defeat of West Ham United last weekend, Erik ten Hag confirmed that Lisandro Martinez had suffered a knee injury that was described as ‘not good news’ and a ‘personal disaster’ for the Argentine.

It is expected that the former Ajax defender will be unavailable for the next eight weeks with that knee injury. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also now a doubt for this one after having to pull of a training session on Thursday evening.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Onana; Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Shaw; Mainoo, Casemiro; Garnacho, Fernandes, Rashford; Hojlund

UNAVAILABLE: Martinez (Injured), Malacia (Injured), Martial (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Wan-Bissaka (Injured), Mount (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

A few weeks ago this one would have appeared to actually be quite a straightforward home win, as was the case in Unai Emery’s first game in charge of Aston Villa back in November 2022. As Emery has said in the build-up, Villa will sharpen and focus their minds to continue on in the league where they have been strong. Despite their improved results, Manchester United have remain mightily unconvincing and extremely susceptible at the back with that weakness only likely to be worse with the fresh absence of Lisandro Martinez. Backing Villa, especially with their overall record at home, looks the way to go for this one.

TIP: ASTON VILLA TO WIN
