How many points are needed for Championship survival?

As we reach the final stretch of the Championship, supporters at the bottom end of the table find themselves studying their current points total consistently, wondering how many they'll need for survival. As it stands, Wigan Athletic, Huddersfield Town and Blackpool are the three sides marooned in the relegation places. But what do they need to give themselves the best chance of ending the season higher than 22nd place.

We've crunched the numbers from previous Championship seasons and taken a look at the points total of each team who has finished in the highest-placed relegation spot since 1996.

When taking into account the information above, the average number of points required for Championship survival over that period of time is 45.67. However, an inferior goal difference bumps that average up to 46.67, which should be seen as a safer mark to aim for. Obviously there are anomaly's, none more so than in the 2012-13 season when Peterborough United were relegated despite accumulating 54 points after losing away to Crystal Palace on the final day of the season.
