THE LOWDOWN

Union Saint-Gilloise

Due to their affiliation with Brighton and Hove Albion, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise have majorly benefitted from impressive recruitment as they punch above their weight in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, once again. Last season, under Felice Mazzu who departed for Anderlecht in the summer of 2022, Union SG finished at the top-of-the-table after the regular season but eventually lost the title Club Brugge in the Championship Round group stage.

Union SG had to then cope with the loss of key players to the aforementioned Brighton, such as loanees Kaoru Mitoma and Deniz Undav, as well as their manager, Mazzu. However, under Karel Geraerts, they have once again been exceptional and head into the final day of the campaign level on points with Antwerp at the top-of-the-table.

That is because they fought back away at Antwerp in their most recent outing, last weekend. Cameron Puertas scored an 80th minute equaliser after they had been limited to ten-men due to Senne Lynen’s red card mid-way through the second-half.

Club Brugge

After winning the Belgian Jupiler Pro League title last season, Club Brugge have endured a really difficult defence of their title as they begin the final round of fixtures sitting firmly in fourth position in the Championship Round playoff stage. Despite reaching the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League this season, their results flattered their performances and they did not get any luck in the league.

Carl Hoefkens began the season in charge before Scott Parker replaced the former Stoke defender and now they are being guided through to the summer under the new management of recently appointed Ronny Deila. Deila departed one of Club Brugge’s biggest rivals, Standard Liege, just last weekend and Standard supporters have labelled the former Celtic and New York City boss as a ‘traitor’.

The visitors were comfortably defeated 3-1 by Genk as they seek to end a disappointing season as quickly as possible after having to settle for just UEFA Europa Conference League qualification next season. They have won just two of their last seven matches.

THE PREDICTION

The Belgian title will be decided on the final day of the season with three teams all going for the top. Antwerp sit top-of-the-table, above Union SG on goal difference with Genk a point behind. If Genk beat Antwerp at home and Union SG drop any points then they will be champions. If Antwerp win and Union SG fail to better their victory by four or more goals against Club Brugge then Antwerp will be champions. If Antwerp draw and Union SG draw or lose then they will be champions. If Antwerp fail to win and Union SG win or if Union SG do better Antwerp's result by four or more then Union SG will be crowned champions. So, basically, Union SG have to win this one and, despite Ronny Deila's appointment complicating matters and likely to lead to Club Brugge's improvement, the main part of that improvement will be done over the summer and they will simply be playing out the season here. Union SG should win and win comfortably as they await news from Genk vs Antwerp.

TIP: UNION SG TO WIN
