THE LOWDOWN

SINT-TRUIDEN

Sint-Truiden are one of a clutch of sides that finished in mid-table last season that will be concerned about the league’s reduction in size from 18 to 16 teams as it will mean that it is easier to be dragged into some sort of relegation battle. Former Bayern Munich midfielder Thorsten Fink was appointed STVV boss over the summer.

They have started the campaign steadily with just two defeats in their opening nine matches and they come into this one on the back of a four-match unbeaten run of form. Their most recent outing was a third draw in four games but the last two draws have been impressive points’ gained away to both Genk and Club Brugge.

UNION SAINT-GILLOISE

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, an affiliate of Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion, have a well run organisation behind the scenes and can absorb departures well in transfer windows, and even improve – as they have done this season after the big money sale of Victor Boniface to Bayer Leverkusen, among others.

The visitors come into this on the back of a 2-0 defeat at Anfield to Liverpool in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League but Union SG put up a real fight and there was only a goal in it until Diogo Jota’s second-half stoppage-time strike. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting at the top-of-the-table in Belgium’s top-flight.

THE PREDICTION

As mentioned, STVV would have been a little concerned about being dragged down towards the bottom part of the table but a steady start to the season, which has continued with three draws in four matches, means they are sitting in the top-half at the start of the match day. Union SG, though, have enjoyed three successive victories in the league and been able to rotate in midweek so they remain favourites against a side struggling to get wins over the line.

TIP: UNION SG TO WIN
