THE LOWDOWN

Gent

For the vast majority of the 2022/23 Jupiler Pro League campaign, Genk have been comfortably at the top-of-the-table and even seemed destined to runaway with the league title. However, they have endured a difficult few months and the Belgian title race is very much on.

Under the management of Wouter Vrancken, the home team were hammered by Union SG in the reverse fixture between these two during the split, last weekend. That comprehensive loss saw former Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess notch a brace.

Since the split, Genk have won one but now suffered back-to-back defeats to Antwerp and Union SG. That means they now sit third in the table ahead of this weekend, four points behind Antwerp at the top. They have managed to win just five of their last 15 Jupiler Pro League matches.

Union Saint-Gilloise

Due to their affiliation with Brighton and Hove Albion, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise have been able to overperform in each of the last two seasons. They lost out on the Belgian title last season to Club Brugge, despite finishing the regular season at the top-of-the-table. Then they lost key players as well as their manager, Felice Mazzu, but, with three games of the season to go, they are back in the title race again.

Union SG, as mentioned, comfortably defeated Genk in their most recent outing with Christian Burgess scoring twice. Despite losing Mazzu at the start of the campaign, they have remained very impressive with the stewardship of former Belgium international midfielder, Karel Geraerts.

Union SG begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting second in the table in the UEFA Champions League qualification spots. They sit a point behind Antwerp at the top-of-the-table after back-to-back victories ahead of this weekend.

THE PREDICTION

With three games of the season to go, this is a huge match in the Belgian title race. Genk can maintain their hopes of finishing at the top-of-the-table with a much-needed victory but their form in the last few months leaves a lot to be desired. They come up against a club that are benefitting from smart recruitment, scouting and a Premier League relationship and that club are gunning for Antwerp at the top. Given the form of the two sides, as well as last weekend's encounter, a double chance bet in favour of the away team looks a good one for this one.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE - UNION SAINT-GILLOISE TO WIN OR DRAW
