THE LOWDOWN

GENK

Under the management of Wouter Vrancken, Genk sat at the top-of-the-table in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League for the majority of last season before collapsing towards the end of the campaign. They eventually missed out on the Belgian title on the final day of the season in dramatic last-gasp fashion and there has been a bit of a hangover from that at the start of this campaign.

The home team come into this on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Adana Demirspor in the second-leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League playoff round tie, drawing 2-2 on aggregate and being taken to extra-time. They were taken to penalties in Turkey and lost 4-2 in the shootout, continuing their very underwhelming start to the campaign across all competitions.

ANDERLECHT

Last season, former Brentford assistant manager Brian Riemer took charge of Anderlecht and led the Brussels club to the last eight of the UEFA Europa Conference League but also oversaw a very disappointing bottom-half finish in the Jupiler Pro League. They will be expecting to kick on and push into the top eight of the table this season after several seasons of significant underperformance.

They have started the 2023/24 Jupiler Pro League campaign by collecting 12 points from their opening five matches and they have been very impressive along the way. After beginning with a 2-0 loss to city rivals Union SG on the opening day back in late-July, they have since defeated Antwerp, Sint-Truiden, Westerlo and Charleroi, albeit all four wins were relatively unconvincing in their nature.

THE TEAM NEWS

GENK

Wouter Vrancken is without midfield duo Bryan Heynen as well as Youssouf Ndayishimiye due to injury so he will be forced into at least one change.

ANDERLECHT

Brian Riemer has had to deal with the loss of Michael Murillo to Marseille this week and is also without key man, Yari Verschaeren, who is injured for this weekend.

THE PREDICTION

After the hosts finished in the top four and the visitors had to settle for mid-table last season, these two sides would have come into this season with very different expectations. However, it is Genk who are struggling down towards the bottom-half with just two wins in four games and having been eliminated from all three European competitions. Anderlecht, sitting at the top-of-the-table ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures, will fancy their chances away at their out of form opposition, who haven’t played well throughout the calendar year of 2023.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – ANDERLECHT TO WIN OR DRAW
