THE LOWDOWN
EUPEN
Last season Eupen only just narrowly avoided finishing in the bottom three and the relegation places in the Jupiler Pro League. They will, therefore, be one of the sides that are concerned about the league shrinking from 18 to 16 teams over the summer, making the lower section of the table a lot more congested and likely for a more competitive relegation battle.
They did, though, appoint former Wolfsburg manager Florian Kohfeldt over the summer. They come into this on the back of a surprise 3-1 defeat at home to Standard Liege in their most recent outing, last weekend, but will be very pleased with Kohfeldt’s impact at the start of this season. They sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table after a bright start.
GENT
Over the summer, Gent managed to hold on to both Gift Orban and Hugo Cuypers, which does mean they have one of the best attacks in Europe, outside of the major leading clubs. They, under the management of Hein Vanhaezebrouck, will believe they can mount something of a challenge at the top-of-the-table in the Jupiler Pro League.
The visitors come into this on the back of a 1-1 draw away to Zorya Luhansk in the opening match of their UEFA Europa League group stage campaign. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting at the top-of-the-table, playing an entertaining style of football, as shown by the fact that 11 of their 13 matches across all competitions have featured both teams scoring so far this season.
THE TEAM NEWS
EUPEN
Florian Kohfeldt’s Eupen have a few injury concerns with two important doubts with both Karel Bialek and Kevin Mohwald potentially missing for this weekend.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Slonina; Paeshuyse, Palsson, Davidson; Magnee, Lambert, Baiye, Van Genechten; Pantovic; Charles-Cook, Nuhu
UNAVAILABLE: Keita (Suspended), Bitumazala (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Bialek (Injured), Mohwald (Injured)
GENT
Hein Vanhaezebrouck does have one of the better attacks in European football but he will be without one of his key forwards as Gift Orban is missing due to injury.
PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Nardi; Kandouss, Watanabe, Torunarigha; Sarnoise, De Sart, Kums, Brown; Hjulsager; Cuypers, Tissoudali
UNAVAILABLE: Orban (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Depoitre (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
Not many people would have expected Eupen to have been as improved as they have been but they are showing signs of regressing to the mean. The hosts’ back-to-back defeats means they have slipped into the bottom-half of the table ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures. They now face a Gent side that are enjoying an impressive campaign with four victories and two draws in their opening six league matches. An away win is the expected outcome for this one.
TIP: GENT TO WIN
