After a few years of being the best side in Africa between tournaments but then failing to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup as well as underperforming at both of the recent AFCON tournaments, Algeria need to properly make a substantial mark to not waste this generation.

ALGERIA PREVIEW: THE PRAGMACY OF PETKOVIC

Algeria are still ranked as low as 41 by FIFA but that number is rising with performances and results improving since the appointment of former Switzerland and Lazio boss Vladimir Petkovic earlier this year.

The north Africans, following another poor showing at the 2023 AFCON earlier this year, come into this one on the back of a 3-0 hammering of Liberia last month to back up a comfortable 2-0 defeat of Equatorial Guinea to kick off their AFCON qualifying campaign.

TOGO PREVIEW: IMPROVED TOGO

Togo do not have much star power but there are some encouraging signs in terms of personnel in attack with the likes of Ihlas Bebou and Kevin Denkey but the former is missing for this October international break due to injury.

The Togolese come into this one on the back of making themselves difficult to beat and they have started their 2025 AFCON qualifying campaign with back-to-back draws against Equatorial Guinea and Liberia last month.

ALGERIA TEAM NEWS: STILL NO BENNACER

AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer remains sidelined through injury for the Algerians but they also have another confirmed absentee as centre-back Mohamed Amine Madani is missing through suspension for this one.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Benbout; Radouani, Touba, Mandi, Ait-Nouri; Boudaoui, Zerrouki; Mahrez, Aouar, Benrahma; Gouiri

UNAVAILABLE: Madani (Suspended), Bennacer (Injured)

TOGO TEAM NEWS: STILL NO BEBOU

As mentioned, Togo are without key forward Ihlas Bebou for this week but they also have several other either confirmed absentees or injury concerns with the likes of Kennedy Boateng, Josue Homawoo and Etienne Amenyido all doubtful or sidelined.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Mensah; Boma, Fofana, Djene; Ouro-Tagba, Karim, Aholou, Annor; Narey, Denkey, Do Laba

UNAVAILABLE: Boateng (Injured), Homawoo (Injured), Bebou (Injured), Amenyido (Injured)

ALGERIA VS TOGO PREDICTION

This one, on paper, does appear to be quite one-sided, especially with home advantage. Algeria, despite riches in their attack, have often flattered to deceive but the north Africans have so much depth to their squad that no matter the combination that Petkovic chooses, they should still have enough to hurt anyone in Africa. Togo have been stubborn in 2024 but Algeria are firm favourites.
