Esteghlal come into this on the back of their first defeat of the tournament after back-to-back wins to start their campaign. Their 4-3 loss against Al-Duhail came after an entertaining first-half in which they led, fell 2-1 behind, equalised and went in 3-2 down at half-time. That backed up a 3-0 victory over Al-Shorta and a 5-2 win against Al-Ahli. Cheick Diabate has scored in all three group matches. They face Al-Duhail once again who are unbeaten after a 2-0 win over Al-Shorta and a 1-1 draw against Al-Ahli before that aforementioned victory over Esteghlal.
