THE LOWDOWN

JORDAN

It has been an extremely impressive 2023 AFC Asian Cup campaign for Jordan, reaching the final of the competition for the first time ever and they have done so with surprising victories in the Round of 16 and the semi-finals over Tajikistan and South Korea, respectively. The Jordanians were by far the better side as they defeated Jurgen Klinsmann’s Koreans by two goals to nil on Wednesday.

Ranked 87th in the world according to FIFA’s rankings, ‘The Chivalrous’ will see this as the start of an international cycle that also sees them qualify for the expanded 48-team 2026 FIFA World Cup. Hussein Ammouta has led a very impressive campaign that has seen them score 12 goals thus far, with an excellent attack including the likes of Mousa Al-Taamari and Yazan Al-Naimat.

QATAR

In 2019, Qatar won the AFC Asian Cup for the first time ever and, quite remarkably, are favourites to defend the trophy for the first time since 2004. The Maroons performed badly at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, losing all three group stage matches, whilst the likes of Australia, Japan and South Korea all reached the knockout stages with both Iran and Saudi Arabia only narrowly missing out.

However, in continental competition, the Qatari’s have been organised and more than competent in simply seeing off opposition. They kept three clean sheets in the group stages before a 2-1 win over Palestine before needing penalties to defeat Uzbekistan. They then came through an extremely dramatic semi-final, defeating Iran by three goals to two.

THE TEAM NEWS

JORDAN

Hamza Al Dardour was sent off in second-half stoppage-time of Jordan’s win against Iraq in the Round of 16 and he has been banned by the Asian confederation and sent home so will be unavailable for this one. Aside from that, Jordan have no other concerns.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Abu Laila; Nasib, Al-Arab, Marie; Haddad, Al-Rashdan, Al-Rawabdeh, Abu Hashish; Al-Taamari, Al Mardhi; Al-Naimat

UNAVAILABLE: Al Dardour (Suspended)

QUESTIONABLE:

QATAR

Qatar have no suspension issues for this final and they also gave no injury concerns so they are expected to name an unchanged team for this one, which is a surprise as it means Hassan Al-Haydos will not be involved in a final from the start.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Barsham; Miguel, Lucas Mendes, Mukhtar, Abdulwahhab; Abdurisag, Gaber, Fatehi, Ahmed; Ali, Afif

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE:

THE PREDICTION

It has been a remarkable campaign from both of these sides and neither of them were expected to make the final, even with the tournament being held in Qatar. Jordan have shown they will put any team under pressure going forward but Qatar, especially with their home advantage, are the firm favourites to make it back-to-back AFC Asian Cup triumphs; albeit there is an expectation that this should be an entertaining encounter on Saturday.

TIP: QATAR TO WIN & OVER 2.5 GOALS
