THE LOWDOWN

SWEDEN

  • A dramatic semi-final between Sweden and Spain saw everything bubble over in the final ten minutes when after conceding with nine minutes of normal time to play, Sweden thought they’d forced extra time through Rebecka Blomqvist in the 88th minute, but their hearts were broken almost immediately as Spain went straight up the other end and retook the lead, subjecting Sweden to a fourth loss in five Women’s World Cup semi-finals
  • Having scored Sweden’s only goal on Tuesday, Blomqvist may well be given the chance to start here ahead of Stina Blackstenius up top as Peter Gerhardsson weighs up whether to rotate his side for this third-placed play-off.

AUSTRALIA

  • Australia gave it everything against England in the semi-finals, but despite the brilliance of striker Sam Kerr, who produced a moment of magic to level the scores with a magnificent long-range strike, the Lionesses proved too strong and the Matildas bowed out, defeated by three goals to one.
  • That semi-final was Kerr’s first start of the tournament, the Chelsea star having come into it not fully fit and following such a gruelling encounter, not to mention the short turnover between full time in Sydney and kick-off here in Brisbane, it would be no surprise to see Kerr back on the bench and given a chance to rest.

THE PREDICTION

So often the third-place play-off is decided by which nation simply wants it more, with the event being very much scant consolation for the two nations who have fallen at the final hurdle between them and the Women’s World Cup final. For Australia especially though, this is an important match as they aim to continue inspiring a generation of new fans in their country and leave themselves a legacy from this historic tournament of which they have played joint-host to. Therefore, it would be no surprise if they came out sharper and more switched on than their opponents here, feeding off the crowd, who have been incredible in their support of the Matildas. Back Australia to get the better of Sweden over the course of 90 minutes and claim third-place in this memorable Women’s World Cup.

TIP: AUSTRALIA TO WIN
