THE LOWDOWN

PORTUGAL

  • Portugal gave a good account of themselves against Netherlands, but a one-goal defeat leaves them with much to do if they wish to qualify for the knockout stage with United States to come following this clash with Vietnam.
  • Perhaps most worrying for Portugal was their real lack of attacking threat and spark, albeit against very strong opposition and this could lead to Francisca Nazareth being fielded from the start with three points an absolute must.

VIETNAM

  • It was no surprise to see Vietnam fall to a comprehensive defeat at the hands of back-to-back Women’s World Cup winners United States and the key will be what their side learned having competed against such a formidable team and what positives they can take into this one.
  • As is the case with Portugal, failure to win here will see Vietnam them all but eliminated from the tournament, when considering that Netherlands awaits them in their final group game, so at some stage, they will need to push bodies forward.

THE KEY STATS

  • This is the first official international fixture between Portugal and Vietnam.
  • Portugal have lost only one of their last seven international matches against AFC nations (W2 D4).
  • In their opening fixture against the USA, Vietnam’s coach Mai Duc Chung (73y 31d) became the oldest coach to take charge of a team in a Women’s World Cup match in the history of the competition.
  • The youngest player in Vietnam’s squad is Vũ Thị Hoa who will be 19 years and 163 days on the day of this match. She did not play in their opening fixture so could become the first teenager to play for the nation at the finals.

THE PREDICTION

This may well be an entertaining battle when taking into account the importance of three points to both Portugal and Vietnam, each of whom are without a point to their name so far in Group E. Portugal will know that if they can repeat their performance from a defensive perspective against Netherlands, but improve their cutting edge up top then a win is well within their grasp and they should be afforded opportunities to score with Vietnam likely to play with more offensive intent, which should leave them exposed at times. Back Portugal to edge victory in Hamilton.

TIP: PORTUGAL TO WIN
