THE LOWDOWN

GERMANY

  • Two-time Women’s World Cup winners Germany will be looking to banish the heartbreak of losing the Euro 2022 final to England last summer after extra time and with plenty of world class names at their disposal, are likely to find themselves at the business end of a major tournament once again.
  • It’s a German squad led again by Martina Voss-Tecklenburg that is submerged with class and strength-in-depth, but no doubt eyes will be on skipper and goal machine Alexandra Popp, not to mention Lena Oberdorf, one of the best young players in Europe, although the 21-year-old is a doubt for this particular game.

MOROCCO

  • Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finalists Morocco face a huge trial by fire for their first ever fixture at the Women’s World Cup, but under two-time Women’s Champions League winning coach Reynald Pedros, the ‘Lionesses of Atlas’ will be dreaming big.
  • A star for Morocco in their memorable WAFCON campaign, skipper Ghizlane Chebbak has a big role to play again for her side here going forward, whilst Pedros is likely to set his side up with bodies behind the ball in bulk as they look to snuff out a formidable German attack.

THE KEY STATS

  • Germany have never failed to qualify for the knockout phase in the eight previous editions of the tournament. They became the first nation to win back-to back Women's World Cups when they triumphed in 2003 and in 2007.
  • Germany have lost only one of their 24 matches in the group stage. They have won 15 and drawn four of their 19 group stage games since a 3-2 defeat vs Sweden in 1995.
  • Germany have won each of their previous five FIFA Women’s World Cup™ matches against African nations without conceding a goal.
  • Germany have not conceded a goal in their last four FIFA Women’s World Cup™ group stage matches.
  • Germany have only failed to score in one of their previous 24 Women’s World Cup group stage matches. The only occasion was a 0-0 draw against England in 2007.
  • Morocco have made history by qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ for the first time. In doing so, they have also become the first Arab nation to successfully reach the finals.
  • Morocco earned their place at Australia & New Zealand 2023 via the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in which they finished as runners-up to South Africa. This represents their best ever performance in Africa’s showpiece competition.

THE PREDICTION

When considering that they are up against the second-lowest ranked nation in the tournament, Germany have no excuses not to get off to a good start in Group H and their high pressing style of play under Voss-Tecklenburg is likely to suit them well against Morocco, who may well find it very difficult to keep hold of the ball. It’s hard not to see Germany carving out a raft of goalscoring opportunities against vastly inferior opposition and with the likes of Popp on the end of them, the net is expected to be found numerous times. Back Germany to brush aside Morocco by at least three clear goals.

TIP: GERMANY TO WIN WITH -2 HANDICAP
