The vast majority of eyes were on Erling Haaland (£15.4m) in Gameweek 9 at home to Southampton and whilst the Norwegian did find the net, he could only score one goal and finish on 6 FPL points, a disappointment for those who used their triple captain chip, with Haaland missing numerous chances to increase his tally.
Another popular captaincy choice was Bryan Mbeumo (£7.7m) and he delighted his ownership with two second half goals in a thrilling 4-3 win for Brentford over Ipswich. Cole Palmer (£11.0m) was also on the scoresheet as Chelsea defeated Newcastle by two goals to one at Stamford Bridge.
The time has now come to focus on Gameweek 10 and the most appealing captain picks on paper. As usual, we’ve chosen three premium options, along with a differential pick ahead of Saturday’s 11:00am deadline.
PREMIUM OPTIONS
Mo Salah (£12.7m) vs BHA (H)
You know that with Mo Salah, the chances of a big return are always good no matter what the fixture. The Egyptian once again came through for his ownership in Gameweek 9, scoring against Arsenal in a 2-2 draw and recording a 10-point-haul, his third double-figure FPL score across the last four gameweeks.
Salah’s overall fantasy score now stands at 84 points after just nine gameweeks of play, that’s the most of all midfielders. With an enticing fixture in Gameweek 10 as Brighton visit Anfield, Salah may well prove to be the smart captain pick for FPL managers when taking into account his points potential.
Bukayo Saka (£10.0m) vs NEW (a)
Back from injury and back on the scoresheet for Arsenal in Gameweek 9, Saka opened the scoring for the Gunners vs Liverpool, his third Premier League goal of the season and tenth attacking return in total. Although it wasn’t enough to force victory, it did earn him 9 FPL points, extending his overall score to 63 points in total.
Arsenal travel to Newcastle in Gameweek 10, who have found clean sheets really difficult to come by so far this campaign. When taking this into account, captaining Saka is an option well worth considering for those looking for an alternate option to the likes of Salah and Haaland.
Bryan Mbeumo (£7.7m) vs FUL (a)
Two goals for Mbeumo, one of those coming from the penalty spot led Brentford to a 4-3 triumph over Ipswich last time out and saw him pick up 15 points after extending his goal tally for the season to 8 in the Premier League. It was also his highest FPL score of the season so far, beating his 14 points accrued in Gameweek 3.
Next up for Brentford is a London derby away to Fulham. Not the easiest of fixtures, but Mbeumo provides a proven goal threat and is also expected to take any penalties that fall the way of the Bees. He deserves to be spoken about when it comes to potential Gameweek 10 captains.
DIFFERENTIAL OPTION
Matheus Cunha (£6.5m) vs CRY (H)
Wolves’ fixtures are starting to turn and after their last gasp equaliser away to Brighton most recently, forward Matheus Cunha could be the man to lead his side’s attempted charge up the table. Cunha’s goal in Gameweek 9 helped him rack up his second 9-point-haul of 2024-25 and took him to 41 FPL points across the season so far.
With a small ownership and against another struggling Premier League side in Gameweek 10 in the form of Crystal Palace, Cunha stands out from a differential point of view. Wolves need three points and it would be a surprise if Cunha was not afforded chances to find the net.
