FPL Gameweek 9 – head-to-head comparisons: Alex McCarthy vs Emiliano Martinez

Two more clean sheets for these two budget goalkeepers in Gameweek 8 continued what has been a fine season so far for both Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) and Emiliano Martinez (£4.8m). McCarthy's clean sheet in Southampton's 2-0 win over Newcastle was his fourth Premier League shut out of the season, whilst Martinez sent a clear message to his old club Arsenal after preventing them from finding the net at the Emirates Stadium in Aston Villa's 0-3 victory at the home of the Gunners.

Gameweek 9 sees Southampton face Wolves at Molineux, whilst Aston Villa host Brighton. On paper this looks to favour Martinez from a clean sheet perspective, however Brighton have only failed to score in one Premier League game this season. Combine that with McCarthy's cheaper price along with the likely save points he could accumulate against Wolves and actually, it's the Saints that could turn out the smart pick in this head-to-head.
