Pep Guardiola is never the easiest manager to try and second guess at the best of times but his decision to leave both Sergio Aguero (£11.7m) and Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) on the bench in Tuesday’s League Cup semi-final in favour of Raheem Sterling came as a great shock. It also leaves further questions over which of the two usual strikers will line-up in Sunday’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa.
Jesus scored a brace in Man City’s last Premier League game and may be difficult to drop but Guardiola’s mind does not always work in that line of thinking. He will prove difficult to leave out but Aguero looks the more likely to start and with the Argentine scoring two more Premier League goals so far this season, he just about edges the selection.
