Leicester’s Harvey Barnes (£7m) enjoyed something of a breakout season last year picking up six goals and ten assists in his 133 total points over the season. There is every chance the talented 22-year-old can progress even further this season and cement his place in Brendan Rodgers’ team as a first-choice wide player. The Foxes open up away to newly-promoted West Brom and they will be looking to get off to a similarly fast start like they did last season. Barnes could offer good value this opening gameweek and over the season too at just £7m.

Steven Bergwijn (£7.5m) is one recruit from the January transfer window that could well kick on with pre-season under his belt and more time training under Jose Mourinho. The Dutch wide man knows he has to produce the goods with Lucas Moura breathing down his neck and a fast start to the season will be imperative. He may split time with Moura in this opening game against Everton and that is the biggest threat to fantasy owners, but he is an interesting different pick. Overall, it is Barnes who has the greater appeal in this mid-range price bracket to start the season.

Verdict: Harvey Barnes
