THE PREDICTION
This is the final that many had predicted before the tournament began, with three-time winner Michael van Gerwen facing Michael Smith in a repeat of the 2019 final. MVG was the victor on that occasion, while Smith was also on the losing end of last year’s final to Peter Wright. Since then though, Bully Boy has added the Grand Slam of Darts trophy to his cabinet – some much needed silverware befitting of his talent – and he looks a more complete player now.
Van Gerwen, though, has been a class apart in this tournament, averaging over 100 in every single game and saving his best performance for his semi-final demolition of Dimitri Van den Bergh. The Dutchman averaged 108.28 in a fine all-round display, and should he replicate that standard here, it is difficult to see Smith living with him.
The game will be played at a frenetic pace with plenty of power scoring, and this certainly has the potential to be an Ally Pally classic, but Van Gerwen is playing at the top of his game right now and we’re tipping him to take the spoils and overcome a handicap of -2.5 sets in the process.
