THE PREDICTION

This is a meeting between two vastly experienced players who have reached the final of this tournament previously and they both showed in round one how capable they still are of producing top quality performances in this double start format. Simon Whitlock in particular was outstanding in defeating Chris Dobey with an average of 101.12 and a success rate of 70% on his starting doubles. It’s going to be difficult for the Australian to match that standard in successive matches of course, and he will be put under more pressure against a confident Mervyn King who looked in good shape in his opening round game. The 2012 Grand Prix runner-up was also impressive on his starting doubles in his victory against James Wade and he looked extremely comfortable throughout the contest. It’s a tough game to predict, Whitlock might just have the edge though as he has fared well against King in recent years - this good recent record includes a win in their most recent meeting at the PDC World Championship last December.
