THE LOWDOWN

PETER WRIGHT

  • The reigning PDC World Champion Peter Wright won’t get a chance to entertain a live crowd at the Marshall Arena but that isn’t likely to stop him from producing high-quality darts as he does just that on a regular basis in behind closed doors events.
  • Snakebite failed to get past round two in his first four attempts at the World Matchplay but since then he has consistently reached at least the quarter-finals and he progressed all the way through to the final in 2017.
  • Wright returned to competitive action in good form at the Summer Series last week where he enjoyed a run to the final on day one and went one better by claiming the title on day five which led to him topping the Order of Merit.

JOSE DE SOUSA

  • Jose de Sousa is making his World Matchplay debut on the back of a landmark last 12 months in which he became the first ever Portuguese player to claim a PDC ranking title last September.
  • De Sousa didn’t stop there though as he went on to win a second title a month later and, although his performances in the major tournaments have not been eye-catching, he certainly has the talent to have a run in the big events.
  • He again highlighted that talent at the Summer Series last week where he impressively reached the final on day three only to lose to the world number one Michael van Gerwen.

THE PREDICTION

Peter Wright faces a very awkward looking first round tie against Portugal’s Jose de Sousa who has proven over the last year what a difficult opponent he is for anyone on the circuit. Wright obviously has the talent and belief to defeat any player and his form at the Summer Series suggests he is well-primed for a good crack at the World Matchplay title but De Sousa has beaten him twice previously and Snakebite will be well aware of that fact. I expect Wright to come through the challenge but it might be close - certainly in the early stage - and so backing them to be level after six legs with Wright going on to win looks appealing at the odds offered.
