THE LOWDOWN

PETER WRIGHT

  • The reigning PDC world champion Peter Wright needed to dig deep as he was forced to come from behind to defeat Portugal’s Jose De Sousa 10-8 in round one.
  • The pivotal moment in the match was when Snakebite ditched his glasses and changed his darts at 8-5 down as this led to a remarkable change in fortunes with the number two seed winning five consecutive legs thereafter to secure the victory.
  • Wright is now aiming to make it through to his sixth consecutive World Matchplay quarter-final - the last time he failed to reach the last eight was in 2014.

GLEN DURRANT

  • Glen Durrant produced a superb performance to ease through 10-3 against Jeffrey de Zwaan with Duzza averaging 107 in the process of disposing of the Dutchman.
  • De Zwaan had claimed the opening leg of the game but thereafter the three-time BDO World Champion took complete control of the contest and never eased up.
  • The consistently heavy scoring throughout from Duzza was extremely impressive and saw him record a first-nine average of 123.18.

THE PREDICTION

This is a mouth-watering contest which wouldn’t look out of place in the semi-finals or final itself and whoever wins will certainly have had to work hard for their place in the last eight. Durrant certainly outperformed Wright in the opening round and if Duzza turns up and plays like that again it will take a big improvement from Snakebite if he is to avoid an early exit. Wright is very much capable of stepping up a level or two when needed though and he will be very much up for the challenge ahead. The last five meetings between the pair have all been won by Wright - including a 6-3 win at the recent Summer Series - and I don’t think that record will get inside of Durrant’s head too much but it might give Wright confidence as much as anything. My betting tips for this match are over 18.5 legs and over 10.5 180s. I also think there is possibly some value in siding with Durrant to win.
