- Nathan Aspinall paid the price for missed doubles on his Matchplay debut in 2019 when he lost to Mervyn King in round one despite averaging 102.
- The Asp has proven his quality in the big tournaments on several occasions over the last 18 months and rightfully starts as one of the pre-tournament favourites to win the 2020 World Matchplay.
- He has claimed three titles so far this year with two Players Championship tournament wins prior to the enforced break followed by his success in the PDC Home Tour which took place during the lockdown.
DIMITRI VAN DEN BERGH
- Dimitri Van den Bergh is no stranger to the big TV tournaments but this is somewhat surprisingly his first appearance at the World Matchplay.
- The former World Youth Champion arrives in Milton Keynes having struggled for consistency over the last year with only two quarter-finals appearances on the circuit since last August.
- He would certainly have hoped for better fortunes at the recent Summer Series where he exited in round one in three of the five tournaments.
THE PREDICTION
Nathan Aspinall has been right up there amongst the best players in the world over the last 18 months and he certainly has the ability to challenge for the title at Milton Keynes this week. The Asp is a fierce competitor who wants to win any event he plays in so the fact the tournament is played behind closed doors without fans should not affect his motivation and desire. Dimitri Van den Bergh presents a tricky first round test for Aspinall but he’s lost each of their previous four meetings and has not been in good enough form to suggest that he will break that losing sequence on this occasion.
