THE LOWDOWN

GLEN DURRANT

  • Current Premier League table-topper Glen Durrant enjoyed a tremendous run to the semi-finals on his World Matchplay debut last year where he defeated Adrian Lewis, Michael van Gerwen and James Wade before losing to Michael Smith.
  • He was unseeded for last year's Matchplay having only made the switch to the PDC at the start of 2019 but such has been his progression up the rankings he is the number 15 seed for the 2020 edition of the tournament.
  • Duzza has yet to progress further than the quarter-finals in a ranking tournament this season but his overall form is not concerning and he showed some good form at the Summer Series when he reached the last eight on the opening day.

JEFFREY DE ZWAAN

  • Jeffrey de Zwaan also reached the semi-finals on his World Matchplay debut where on his run to the last four in 2018 he accounted for Michael van Gerwen, Adrian Lewis and Dave Chisnall before losing to the eventual champion Gary Anderson.
  • De Zwaan lost out in a thrilling round one encounter against James Wade a year ago with Wade eventually winning in a last-leg decider to end the Dutchman’s hopes of another good run in the tournament.
  • A semi-final appearance at Players Championship 3 in February hinted at a good season ahead for De Zwaan but since then he has failed to make it further than the last 16 in 12 subsequent tournaments and suffered some disappointing early exits in the Summer Series events last week.

THE PREDICTION

Both of these players have reached the semi-finals of the World Matchplay – be it at a different venue than this one – and they have the undoubted talent to go deep in the 2020 tournament. Duzza has been a regular in the latter stages of the big TV events since switching to the PDC and his performances in the opening weeks of the Premier League have just proved even more what a class act he is. When De Zwaan finds his range, he can produce spellbinding darts, but the consistency in his game is just not where it needs to be and consistency is one of Duzza’s main strengths, so it is Durrant who is predicted to claim the victory in this encounter.
