THE LOWDOWN

GLEN DURRANT

  • Glen Durrant came from behind to win 18-16 in an epic quarter-final match against Vincent van der Voort on Friday night and he is now through to the semi-finals at the World Matchplay for a second successive year.
  • Van der Voort looked to be in full control of the match when he led 10-5 but Duzza showed all of his fighting spirit and coolness under pressure to claw his way back into contention and then edge through when the game went into extra-legs.
  • Durrant’s match average of 95.21 and checkout percentage of 35.3% in that victory are skewed by a couple of 23-darters in which he missed 18 darts at double. In the other 32 legs of the contest, he missed 17 darts which shows how good his finishing was for the majority of the contest.

DIMITRI VAN DEN BERGH

  • World Matchplay debutant Dimitri Van den Bergh made it through to his first ever major ranking semi-final with a 16-12 victory against Adrian Lewis on Friday night.
  • An impressive start to the match saw Van den Bergh averaging 103 as he established an 8-2 lead at the second interval and although Lewis closed the gap to three legs on a couple of occasions the young Belgian never looked like being denied victory.
  • This may be Van den Bergh’s first appearance in the last four of a major ranking tournament but an appearance in the latter stages of a TV tournament is not alien to him as he reached the final of the televised German Darts Masters World Series event in 2018 where he defeated Van Gerwen in the quarters and Gary Anderson in the semi-finals.

THE PREDICTION

Glen Durrant and Dimitri Van den Bergh do battle to reach their first PDC major ranking tournament final, and their performances in reaching this stage of the 2020 World Matchplay suggest we could have an enthralling tight contest to look forward to. They have both shown plenty of talent and bottle when they have had to dig deep, with Durrant recovering from 10-5 down against Van der Voort whilst Van den Bergh looked to be on his way to exiting against Joe Cullen, and those tussles are sure to stand them in good stead for what could be an epic encounter. Durrant does have the edge in terms of experience and I’m leaning towards him to come through, but my main betting tip is for over 29.5 legs in the match. I also think that there could be some value in backing Van den Bergh to be winning after six legs - Duzza has started slowly in each of his last two matches and the odds of 2/1 on the young Belgian have his nose in front after six legs look appealing.
