THE LOWDOWN

GERWYN PRICE

  • Gerwyn Price arrives in Milton Keynes as one of the main contenders for the title and the Welshman might see the change of venue as a positive having exited the tournament in the opening round in each of the last three years.
  • The Welshman’s career has really risen over the last couple of years and his confidence coming into this event will certainly be higher than it has been in his previous World Matchplay appearances.
  • Price reached the final in each of his last four tournaments prior to the enforced break and he warmed up for this event with a run to the final on the last day of the recent Summer Series.

DANNY NOPPERT

  • Danny Noppert produced a disappointing performance on his World Matchplay debut last year when he lost 10-6 against Gary Anderson with an average of just under 88.
  • His results in the major ranking tournaments since he switched to the PDC have been underwhelming for a player of his ability and, although he has broken into the top 32, he needs to do more in the majors if he is to keep rising up the rankings.
  • Noppert’s early season form on the tour in 2020 was encouraging as he reached two semi-finals before the tour was halted. He showed no signs of rustiness on his return to action at the Summer Series where he enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals in the first tournament back since the tour resumed.

THE PREDICTION

Much is expected of Gerwyn Price at this tournament and there can be no doubt that he is capable of going all the way and winning the title. Although the Welshman usually thrives on the atmosphere, he has proven on numerous occasions that playing behind closed doors is not an issue and a strong opening round performance is anticipated from the number three seed. Danny Noppert is not a pushover by any means and it seems only a matter of time before he does contend more in the latter stages of the big tournaments, but the draw has not been kind to him here and Price should be too strong. Backing Price to win whilst also hitting the most 180s is the betting tip.
