THE LOWDOWN

DAVE CHISNALL

  • Dave Chisnall is a five-time quarter-finalist at the World Matchplay and has been an ever-present at the tournament since he made his debut back in 2011.
  • Chizzy’s disappointing first round exit against Max Hopp at last year’s Matchplay was the first time he had failed to get past round one since 2012.
  • His results in 2020 prior to the enforced break were disappointing by his standards with only one ranking tournament quarter-final appearance to his name, but at the Summer Series last week he showed up well on the first couple of days and had a run to the quarters on the first day followed by an appearance in the final on day two where he just missed out in a thriller against Ryan Joyce.

VINCENT VAN DER VOORT

  • Vincent van der Voort will be hoping a change of venue brings a change of fortunes as he has lost in the opening round in each of his last five appearances at the World Matchplay.
  • The Dutchman’s best performance in the tournament came all the way back in 2009 but since then he has never been further than the second round.
  • His previous form in 2020 will need to be improved upon if he is to enjoy a good run at the Marshall Arena as he has only made it through to the last 16 in two ranking events this season and also hasn’t reached a quarter-final since last October.

THE PREDICTION

This has the potential to be an entertaining contest between two very watchable players who will hopefully get in the rhythm early on and show what they are capable of. Dave Chisnall starts as the favourite as he generally performs to a higher standard on a more regular basis than Van der Voort who has seen his career affected by injury problems over the past few years. The big Dutchman certainly still has the ability when he is in the groove but it’s harder these days for him to sustain it over this longer format. Chizzy produced some good darts in reaching the final at one of the Summer Series tournaments last week and he is tipped to show more of the same whilst progressing through to round two with a 10-6 victory.
