THE LOWDOWN

DANNY NOPPERT

  • Danny Noppert took advantage of a below-par performance from the number three seed Gerwyn Price as he reached round two with a 10-7 victory over the Welshman.
  • Noppie wasn’t exactly at his best either but he produced the goods at the key moments to win a match in which both players finished with similar averages of just under 91.
  • This is only his third appearance in the last 16 of a major PDC ranking tournament since he made the switch from the BDO in early 2018.

ADRIAN LEWIS

  • Adrian Lewis impressively held his nerve to defeat Steve Beaton 11-9 in the opening round and now a win against Danny Noppert would put him into the quarter-finals for the first time since 2017.
  • Although Lewis had his nose in front for most of the game against Beaton he could not shake off the veteran and as a result the match went all the way into extra-legs.
  • Jackpot was averaging 104 after 10 legs of the contest and although this dipped to 97.27 by the end of the game, it was still an improvement on many of his recent big stage performances.

THE PREDICTION

Adrian Lewis showed signs of the old Jackpot in his win against Steve Beaton in round one and, although it is too early to talk about him as a potential winner of the tournament, he is a threat to anyone. A match against Danny Noppert is easier on paper than Gerwyn Price but Noppie is a very capable performer who is much better than he showed against the Welshman. This is a very intriguing contest and one which could well go into extra-legs. I’m just edging towards Lewis as the winner, but my main betting tip is for over 18.5 legs in the match as their only previous meeting went the distance and this encounter could follow suit.
