THE LOWDOWN

ADRIAN LEWIS

  • Adrian Lewis is through to his 10th World Matchplay quarter-final after defeating Steve Beaton and Danny Noppert in the first two rounds of the 2020 tournament.
  • Jackpot’s match against Noppert was finely poised when the Dutchman led 5-4 but Lewis went on to claim seven of the next nine legs to progress through to the last eight.
  • Although Noppert struggled for consistency, it was still a very good performance from Lewis and his average of 99.81 in the second round was an improvement on the 97.27 he posted in round one.

DIMITRI VAN DEN BERGH

  • World Matchplay debutant Dimitri Van den Bergh came from behind to defeat Joe Cullen 11-9 in round two and the Belgian is now through to his third consecutive major ranking quarter-final having also reached this stage at both the World Championship and UK Open.
  • He had looked to be heading out of the tournament when Cullen had darts to go 9-5 ahead but the Yorkshireman missed his opportunities and Van den Bergh capitalised to snatch the leg and then went on to win five of the next six legs to reach the last eight.
  • Van den Bergh defeated Lewis in their only previous major ranking tournament meeting when he came back from three sets to one down to claim a 4-3 victory in the last 16 at the World Championship last December.

THE PREDICTION

Adrian Lewis is certainly no stranger to the latter stages of major tournaments but, given that those appearances have been rare in recent years, this is the biggest match he has played for some time. It’s no fluke that he is through to the quarter-finals as he has played to a good standard in his opening two games, though it is also worth mentioning that neither of his opponents averaged over 90. Dimitri Van den Bergh has been involved in quarter-finals matches in major tournaments previously and he must see this as a very good chance to reach his first major semi-final, the fact he has beaten Lewis previously on the big stage will give him confidence. It would be natural for both players to display nerves and this has the potential to be a tense battle that could go into extra legs. Maybe the fact that Lewis has shed a few pounds in weight will stand him in good stead if this is the case. I’m just edging towards a Lewis victory but my main betting tip is over 27.5 legs in the match.
